This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. Thanks to Thomas King, a writer for Linux.com and LXer, for doing the rough editing for this series of interview segments!
This series of 11 video segments features Brazilian entreprenuer Marcelo Marques, the prinicpal of Brazilian network security and training company 4Linux. He is also the principal of LPI Brazil, an international training and certification company. This footage was shot on the premises of Marcelo's company, called 4Linux, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The shoot starts while the afternoon sun is declining behind Marcelo. The last few segments are a bit darker than we would have liked, but the audio is good throughout, and Marcelo is such an engaging character that you will want to stick with his interview to the end.
In segment 10 (121~001), Marcelo says that he has not seen the government arrest people for illegal software use. Instead, he says that it is the BSA (the Business Software Alliance) that enforces the licenses. He says that Free Software Open Source Software will help Brazilians learn to share resources. One example is schools. By installing Linux on computers for schools, the Free Software movement is getting people more active in volunteer projects. In the past, IT people didn't care about the poor in Brazil. Now, the Free Software movement is reaching out to the poor people in the north of Brazil to get computers and get on-line. Marcelo finishes this segment with a wish for Brazil's future, which you will have to hear by continuing with segment 11.
In segment 11, (121~002), Marcelo says that his wish for Brazil's future is that Brazil will be seen as a leader of Free Software, and that people will understand the cultural implications of Free Software. For example, he says that the Free Software movement is becoming active to get poor people on-line, which is an instance of out-reach that is uncommon in Brazil. Switching topics, he says that by providing support for LPI and training for Linux, 4Linux benefits from the trainees who go into companies, and then they try to move the companies to purchase more Linux solutions, which helps his company (4Linux).
